Classes for January

As the province remains in lockdown for the month of January, we will continue offering our classes via Zoom. Our classes will be taught in the same format, just a different environment. Class will still have warm ups, exercises, drills, and belt level content. Students will still learn their curriculum techniques, kata, and routines, and there will be continued focus on self defense through shadow self defense for lower belts, and bunkai for higher belts. We want this experience to be as similar as possible to in-person classes. Striping and belt grading will also continue using Zoom.

Classes will run at the same time as the regular in person classes, for the most part. Check the posted schedules to see what time your belt level class is and then click on the Zoom link at that time to join. Aero kickboxing class will be limited to one per evening. Please check the posted schedule for times. Classes and links will also be posted on the calendar.

What does this mean for our students?

Here are some tips for a successful online class

  • Prepare a space at home where you can train without injury. You may have to get a little creative.
    • Make sure there is space for karate techniques such as punching and kicking
    • If you have a yoga mat or towel, have it nearby for push ups and sit ups.
    • Instructors will offer variations to techniques for those who are limited in space.
  • Set up your camera and test it out to make sure you are fully in the camera frame and not your ceiling . It is important that we can see you on screen so we can give feedback.
  • Full participation is expected. This is still a regular karate class, therefore we expect focus, discipline, and effort.
    • Parents of younger students should be nearby to make sure students are focusing and staying safe.
  • Wear your proper uniform
    • full gi with belt, or gi pants and shirt with belt.
    • for kata classes and gradings a full gi is required.
  • When signing into Zoom, please use a name that is recognizable to us so we know who it is.
  • During class, please have video on, audio off. If you have a question, raise your hand or ask it in the chat.
    • If there is an issue with having video on or your video doesn’t work, please contact us directly to let us know. As this is a class, instructors need to see the students to give feedback, as well as for testing purposes.

This is a work in progress and we appreciate your patience and support as we work through this online environment. Will there be hiccups along the way? Most likely, but let’s all work together to make the best of our given situation.
